COPLOWDALE
EXPLANATION OF THESE PAGES
The name COOPER is thought to originate from the Latin “CUPARIUS” and is
often linked with the occupation of a maker and repairer of wooden vessels such
as barrels, tubs, buckets, casks and vats.
Middle English COUPER, COWPER (apparently from Middle Low German
‘KUPER’, a derivative of ‘KUP’ meaning tub, container, which was borrowed
independently into English as ‘
The first known registration of the name was under the spelling of
‘CUPERE’ in the year 1176/77.
My genealogical research covers the name COOPER and the variants
COWPER/COUPER.
Research beginning in the 16th century shows a firm presence for many
generations in the Coplowdale/Little Hucklow areas of

During this time, my ancestors were mainly lead miners or farmers, but
we did have a Methodist Minister, as most seem to have been non-conformists.
Coplowdale and Little Hucklow are small
neighbouring hamlets situated between Tideswell and Bradwell (information about the area can be found on the Peak District link

In later years, movement from the Coplowdale area became more prolific,

Anyone researching the COOPER name in the Bradwell
area should be aware that numerous records exist, but were largely ignored, as
little evidence of connections with Bradwell existed
at the time of original research.
