COOPER's of COPLOWDALE
AND OTHER FAMILY LINKS

EXPLANATION OF THESE PAGES

The name COOPER is thought to originate from the Latin “CUPARIUS” and is often linked with the occupation of a maker and repairer of wooden vessels such as barrels, tubs, buckets, casks and vats.  Middle English COUPER, COWPER (apparently from Middle Low German ‘KUPER’, a derivative of ‘KUP’ meaning tub, container, which was borrowed independently into English as ‘COOP’.)

The first known registration of the name was under the spelling of ‘CUPERE’ in the year 1176/77.

My genealogical research covers the name COOPER and the variants COWPER/COUPER.
Research beginning in the 16th century shows a firm presence for many generations in the Coplowdale/Little Hucklow areas of the Hope Valley in the Peak District of Derbyshire, UK.
During this time, my ancestors were mainly lead miners or farmers, but we did have a Methodist Minister, as most seem to have been non-conformists.
Coplowdale and Little Hucklow are small neighbouring hamlets situated between Tideswell and Bradwell (information about the area can be found on the Peak District link sites).
In later years, movement from the Coplowdale area became more prolific, and while some moved to Hyde and Stalybridge in Cheshire to become shopkeepers and publicans, others made the move to Peak Dale, Dove Holes and Buxton in Derbyshire as farmers, blacksmiths and quarry workers.  Some of the family worked at a shirt factory in Dove Holes, which is long gone and beyond the memory of most of the current inhabitants.
The enclosed record pages are by no means comprehensive and most were taken from the original parish record books and census film by noting the COOPER/COWPER entries.
Anyone researching the COOPER name in the Bradwell area should be aware that numerous records exist, but were largely ignored, as little evidence of connections with Bradwell existed at the time of original research.
Apart from the ‘generation charts’, inclusion in these pages does not necessarily mean a direct link to my family.
